Phoebe + Alex | Private Estate

I think Phoebe and Alex were ahead of the times when they reached out to us in late 2019 for their intimate, backyard wedding for 20 guests. At our first meeting, Phoebe and Alex invited us to their beautiful 70’s contemporary home where we were greeted by their sweet chocolate lab, Cooper. They had a vision to completely renovate their backyard and bring in new landscaping, lighting, and an renovated deck to act as a romantic backdrop for an intimate dinner with the ones they hold most dear to them.

As Santa Barbara natives, it was important for them to infuse the city’s laid back vibe and highlight their tight-knit community in their design and flow of events. While their original plan included getting married at the courthouse and riding around downtown Santa Barbara in a trolley bar hopping until they got to their house for the reception (talk about a dream of a cocktail hour right?!), they instead opted to have an intimate ceremony on family property and reduce their count even further to create a safe space for their loved ones to gather and celebrate the two of them officially becoming husband and wife.

When we asked Phoebe and Alex about their favorite activities as a couple, the first thing they noted was their love of being in or on the water together. I think the new ceremony location was always meant to be, because it offered the most beautiful, secluded ocean backdrop to exchange vows in front of. Because the location really spoke for itself, we kept the design in this space fairly minimal. Heirloom Table created a low profile, yet lush greenery and floral installation that elevated the space but didn’t distract from the ocean views. Phoebe and Alex’s ceremony was full of SO MUCH love and pure joy. The emotions and support from those witnessing them say “I do” were so tangible.

After their ceremony, guests were invited back to Phoebe and Alex’s home for cocktails, conversation, and an incredible family-style meal prepared by the couple’s friend and Chef, PA Tremblay. Phoebe’s and Alex’s vision for their wedding was to create a casual and fun atmosphere that allowed them to really feel connected to each other, their families, and closest friends. In their beautifully renovated backyard, we created a u-shaped dining layout that allowed for some space between tables to keep everyone safely distanced, but still create a really communal dining experience. The design of the space came to life with unique rentals from Theoni and modern, neutral floral arrangements from Heirloom Table.

We loved working with Phoebe and Alex to create their dream wedding aesthetic, right in their backyard! Their thoughtfulness in selecting a local vendor team, asking friends to contribute with their unique gifts, and the love we felt between them and their guests made for a really special and heartfelt celebration.
