J+C Design | Behind the Scenes

We were so excited when Jill reached out to us for assistance designing and planning her wedding at Whispering Rose Ranch. The venue is one of the most beautiful spaces we’ve had the opportunity to work at and because of her background as a wedding photographer, we knew she’d value all the small details the same way we do!

With Jill’s mood board, we mapped out a style that fit with the rustic setting, but brought in boho touches and romantic design elements to create an overall warm and inviting ambiance for her guests. Their color palette focused on subdued, warm tones like rust, mustard and muted pinks. We contrasted these understated hues with vibrant pops of color in their floral selections as well as gold accents and subtle additions of black in the dining space.

While Whispering Rose Ranch is know for it vibrant, sprawling trees, the landscape is beautiful year round. Even though Jill wedding was in March, when all of the trees had lost their leaves, the views were still breathtaking and it allowed for her vibrant florals to pop even more. The ceremony was held on a big open field and with J+C’s small guest count, we needed to ground the space and make it feel intentionally placed. In order to do so, we sourced black bentwood chairs for guest seating and selected a large, statement arbor.

The inspiration behind the arbor came from these three photos below. Jill knew she wanted something circular, but not too symmetrical. Carla, of Idlewild Floral, designed an asymmetrical installation that incorporated lush blooms, billowy pampas grass, as well as greenery and fall foliage.

We felt it was important to add some kind of floral treatment to the aisle to balance the distribution of organic textures in the ceremony space. Our vision for this stemmed from the middle image below from one of our favorite past weddings. Rather than line the full aisle, we decided to just add in caps to the rear of the aisle, as to not overwhelm the space and allow the black chairs to serve out their purpose as a grounding element.

Idlewild designed what has to be one of our favorite bridal bouquets to date! Jill’s bouquet was soft, yet textural. It was romantic, yet modern, and had just the right amount of boho feel to it. Soft shades of pink and white, off set by bright pops of red made this bouquet the perfect accessory to Jill’s understated-glam styling.

Jill and Christian’s signage and paper-good needs were minimal, but that didn’t mean we were willing to compromise on their design. Alyssa, with Fawn Lettering. helped us create a design plan hat incorporated soft grays, a deep burgundy, and delicate calligraphy mixed with clean typography.

Because Jill and Christian’s wedding day ended up being quite cool and drizzly, we decided to install a clear tent to protect their reception space. This allowed guests to take in the gorgeous views of the surrounding landscaping while staying warm throughout the evening as they ate, danced and celebrated together. We also made lighting a big focal point of our design. Candles and hanging bulbs displayed above dining tables created a soft and inviting feel in the reception space.

For the rentals in the reception space, we used the same black bentwood chairs sourced for ceremony and opted to pair them with a masculine, metal leg ashy-wood table.

With the table and chair combo in the reception space, we knew we wanted to select tableware rentals that leaned a bit more feminine and added a touch of vintage to off set the modern industrial feel created by the lighting installation. Vintage black and gold mismatched plates paired with black dipped gold flatware, gold rimmed mauve glassware, and a woven Sienna napkin completed the tablescape.

Jill and Christian knew they wanted a small lounge space in their reception area for guests to relax, chat, and enjoy dessert after dinner. For their lounge space, we sourced warm toned leather furniture and selected a blue rug and pillows that would pop against the tableware and floral arrangements.

The arrangements designed by Idlewild really brought the reception space to life. Tables were topped with long, low arrangements and burnt sienna pillar candles. We also added smilax to the lighting installation, which helped alleviate some of the heaviness from the wiring and tied in with the greenery in the tabletop arrangements.

We’re so grateful to have had the chance to work with incredible vendor on Jill and Christian’s wedding day. With a short timeline and a big vision to execute, we couldn’t be more thankful for having such a trusting, appreciative bride and groom who allowed us to run with their vision and create something really special to celebrate their love!
